About Us

The Tennessee Room houses a non-circulating  special collection devoted to genealogical and local historical research.  In addition to over 5,000 books and bound periodicals, there are over 2,100 microfilm rolls containing Madison County records, Tennessee census schedules and Soundex finding aids, Jackson, Tennessee newspapers, Tennessee death indexes, Jackson Tennessee city directories and Sanborn maps, funeral records, West Tennessee land grants and indexes, and other records. There are six microfilm reader/printers with which to access microfilm. The collection also includes maps, Jackson city directories, Madison County school annuals, funeral records, vertical files, and photographs.

Two computers connected to the internet are available for researchers wishing to search online sources.  The Tennessee Room currently provides visiting researchers free access to the HeritageQuest Online and Ancestry Library Edition databases.  HeritageQuest Online is also available free to library card holders on their home computers.  Wireless access for patron’s laptop computers is also available.

The Tennessee Room maintains a close working relationship with the Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society and has a complete set of bound back issues of their quarterly publication, Family Findings.

One full time staff member and two part time staff members maintain the collection and assist researchers with the books, materials, and equipment.  Volunteers supplement the staff by helping with specific tasks or projects.

Although the staff does not conduct genealogical research for patrons, they will provide limited searches for specific information.  Please refer to the Request Information page for correspondence guidelines and fees.
