part-time assistant,

 is having his 90th birthday on January 25. 

 There will be a reception for him

 Saturday, January 28, 2 – 4 pm

Mr. Pounds has served the Tennessee Room of the library

as a volunteer for over 15 years and

 as an employee for about eight years.

He is a World War II veteran,

 having served in North Africa, Italy, and Southern France,

 driving trucks and amphibious dukws. 

He was active in the organization of Dixie League baseball

in Madison County.

Everyone is invited to drop by

and wish Mr. Pounds a

Happy 90th Birthday.

Touring Tennessee, A Postcard Panorama 1898-1955,

This book invites you to leaf through its pages and study the faces of Tennessee political figures and soldiers who led and defended the Confederacy during the Civil War.   A short paragraph accompanies each photo, identifying names, units, and service information, along with biographical tidbits.  It is an ideal book to contemplate as we observe the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

Visiting Lecturer and Performer, Adam Gussow

Will present:

“Learning From John Lee Williamson:

A Harp Player’s Perspective”

John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson is the innovative and prolific blues musician and songwriter from Madison County, Tennessee, who pioneered the blues harmonica (aka harp) as an amplified lead instrument; a sound we’re familiar with today…imagine how it must have sounded to the people who heard it for the first time in the 1930′s and 40′s.

Adam Gussow is not only a musician and college professor, but an innovator in his own right.  A biographical note at the website http://www.reverbnation.com/adamgussow states:

“As a blues harmonica player and teacher, Adam Gussow has few peers in the business. Currently an Associate      Professor of English and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi with a specialty in blues literature and culture, Gussow was one of the first amplified blues harp players to make overblows a key element of his stylistic approach, adapting Howard Levy’s innovations in the late 1980s in a way that helped usher in a new generation of overblow masters.”

Music is very much about tradition and heritage;

collective innovations handed down through generations of musicians.

Perhaps there are musicians in your family,

whose accomplishments need to be preserved…
