February is not only Black History Month, it is also in the midst of the War of 1812 bicentennial.
The Fall 2012 issue of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly contains two articles that bridge these historical themes:
“Slavery and the War of 1812,” by Nathaniel Millett and
“Sons of Freedom,” by Gene Allen Smith.
Although the War of 1812 is rarely associated with the Black slave population in America, these articles provide insight into how this war impacted it and in turn how it influenced the war.
